Why spring is peak pest season in Sydney

Sydney's warmer, more humid spring weather wakes pest colonies that slowed down over winter and pushes them to expand.

Insects cannot make their own body heat, so once Sydney's average daytime top climbs from about 20°C in September towards 24°C in November, colonies get busy again.

Rain matters too. Wet soil pulls termites towards timber, and flooded ant nests send trails indoors. More insects in the garden usually means the ones you cannot see are busy too.

Spring pests in Sydney arrive in roughly the same order each year, though a warm, sticky week can bring any of them forward.

September: ants, termites, cockroaches

Ants, cockroaches and subterranean termites are the first Sydney pests to stir in September, as the soil warms.

Ants usually give themselves away first, with a trail along the skirting board after heavy rain.

German cockroaches breed fast in warm kitchens, and one egg case can hold up to about 40 eggs. The one near the kettle probably is not alone.

Subterranean termites (the kind that tunnel through soil to reach timber) forage harder now too. Look for pencil-width mud tubes on brick piers.

October: spiders, wasps, mosquitoes

Spiders, wasps and mosquitoes become far more noticeable around Sydney in October, as nights warm up and storms roll through.

Huntsmen wander inside before rain, though they look far scarier than they are.

European wasp queens scout nest sites in eaves and retaining walls. Mosquitoes need only a saucer of still water, and in warm weather they go from egg to adult in about a week.

November: rodents, fleas, bed bugs (travel season)

November adds rodents, fleas and bed bugs, right as end-of-year travel and visiting relatives pick up.

Rats and mice breed quickly in mild weather, and scratching above the ceiling after dark is the classic sign.

Flea eggs hatch faster in warm, humid conditions, and a few fleas on the dog in October can be in the carpet by November.

Bed bugs travel in suitcases, so unpack in the laundry and hot-wash your travel clothes.

The most dangerous spring pests in Sydney homes

Three spring pests do most of the serious harm in Sydney homes: termites damage timber, male funnel-webs have a life-threatening bite, and European wasps sting repeatedly.

Termites: spring swarming explained

Termite swarming happens when a mature colony sends out winged termites, called alates, to pair up and start new colonies nearby.

In Sydney, that usually means a warm, humid evening between October and late summer, often the day after rain. Alates fly to light, so check windowsills the next morning.

Flying ants swarm in the same weather, but termite alates have straight antennae and front and back wings of equal length.

Only established colonies produce alates, so wings on your floor usually mean termites are living close by. Do not spray them. Seal a few in a jar and book a termite inspection.

Funnel-web spiders: peak activity window

Male Sydney funnel-web spiders wander at night from roughly November to April, and that is when they most often turn up inside homes.

They go looking for females after rain. A gap under the laundry door is enough to get in, and once inside they hide in shoes or the pool skimmer box. The males are the dangerous ones.

European wasps: nest building begins

Each spring, European wasp queens leave their winter shelter and start new nests alone, usually underground or in a wall or roof cavity.

The Australian Museum lists the species as firmly established in metropolitan Sydney. A nest may be just a small hole with wasps flying in and out.

They can sting more than once. Never plug the hole or pour anything in, because trapped wasps will find another exit, sometimes through your ceiling.

Canterbury-Bankstown

Many post-war brick and fibro houses here sit on raised timber subfloors, where termites work unseen. Near the Georges River reserves around Picnic Point and Revesby Heights, funnel-web risk rises from November.

Federation and inter-war homes near the station and Burwood Road have decades-old timber that termites love. The rail line and shopping strip keep rats fed, which explains a lot of November roof scratching.

Walk-up unit blocks sit beside older cottages, close to the Haldon Street food strip. Cockroaches and bed bugs move between flats through shared walls, so treating one unit rarely works. Ask your strata manager about doing the whole building.

North Shore

Wahroonga, Turramurra, St Ives and West Pymble back onto Ku-ring-gai Chase, Garigal and Lane Cove National Parks. Damp leaf litter and sandstone walls suit funnel-webs, and old stumps draw termites. If your yard runs into the bush, treat any large black spider as a funnel-web.

Spring pest prevention checklist for Sydney homeowners

The best spring pest prevention for Sydney homes is cutting off moisture and easy ways in.

• Tip out standing water after rain, and clear the gutters while you are up there.
• Rake mulch off your slab edge so at least 75 mm shows and weep holes stay clear.
• Fix dripping taps and point air-conditioner overflow pipes away from the house.
• Stack firewood off the ground and away from your walls.
• Fit door seals to laundry and garage doors. Funnel-webs walk straight under gaps.
• Shake out boots and gloves before putting them on.
• Watch your eaves for five minutes on a sunny morning. Wasps entering the same crack repeatedly means a nest.

When to book a spring pest inspection

The best time to book a spring pest inspection in Sydney is September or early October, before termite swarms and funnel-web season get going.

Australian Standard AS 3660.2 recommends a termite inspection at least every 12 months. Book sooner if you find wings on a sill or timber that sounds hollow.
